Creative Conference Center
The relationship of the new high technology economy and the old economy of timber in the Northwest is the basis for this design. Situated in a historic, heavy timber and brick structure, the conference center serves as a meeting place for Portland’s evolving creative services sector. There are two intersecting planes that slide through the two lower floors: one of fiberglass, colored fiber optic lights, and copper (the wall of technology), and a wood slat wall – a modern interpretation of a traditional timber lodge. The project sets out to set up a high contrast to the historic building with sleek, modern components, and features a composition of floating planes that are used to loosely define space as minimally as possible.
